Question: Can you give me some pointers on what I should do to get my boat ready for use after winter storage?

Answer: Some time ago, OMC put out a checklist that will help to make sure you don't miss any of the basics. Of course, your boat may require some additional steps, depending on configuration, individual use, and accessories.

Basic Spring Tune Up Checklist

  • Check all hardware, steering, throttle, and shift systems.

  • Check gearcase lubricant.

  • Check gearcase for leakage. If it is leaking, bring it in for service.

  • Check condition of anticorrosion anodes. Replace if 33% to 50% depleted.

  • Check propeller for nicks of damage.

  • Check oil level on 4-stroke outboards.

  • Check lubricant level in power trim/tilt reservoir.

  • Oil injections models: if oil hose was disconnected for storage, follow the Oil Injection Instructions in the Owner's Manual to reconnect. (If oil hose was disconnected, check for evidence of water in the oil tank. If present, bring engine to our service department. If not, then top off tank with oil.)

  • Inspect spark plugs and connections.

  • Remove battery from storage, check water level, and test.

  • Clean battery terminals. Charge, and install battery.

  • Lubricate all linkages on the motor.
  • If engine was removed from the transom for storage, when it is reattached, make sure the steering, shift, and throttle systems are properly attached and adjusted. Follow manufacturer's installation instructions.

  • Lubricate steering cable ram with appropriate grease.

  • Check steering function, travel, and tightness of attachments.

  • Check engine mounting bolts.

  • Check warning system and all gauges.

  • Check emergency stop function. Also check remote control "start in neutral only" function.

  • Check all fuel and oil hoses and connections.

  • For models with oil injection, if the engine is being reattached to the boat, prime the oil supply system before priming the fuel system. Make sure the oil line is purged of all air before connecting the engine.

  • If the fuel wasn't treated with a Fuel Conditioner before storage, replace it with fresh gas.

  • Lubricate prop shaft and install propeller.

  • Verify water pump operation.
